Haringey’s Labour MPs, Catherine West and David Lammy
Tottenham has re-elected its Labour MP David Lammy with an increased majority.
The Labour MP won his fifth election in the seat since 2000 with 28,654 votes, a majority of 23,564 over his nearest rival.
Second placed was Conservative Stefan Mrozinski with 5090 votes, while the Greens were third with 3,931.
After his victory was announced, Mr Lammy told the crowd in Alexandra Palace: “To all those who helped me I am very grateful. This is a staggering result for us here and I think it’s the beginning of a wonderful night in the London borough of Haringey.
“Tottenham has given me the biggest majority for the MP for Tottenham for at least 25 years.
“It does look like this is a difficult night for the Labour Party in other parts of the country. I am pleased in London we seem to be bucking the trend.”
Turhan Özen, the Liberal Democrat candidate, was unsuccessful
His Liberal Democrat opponent, the Turkish-speaking Turhan Özen, told Londra Gazete that he would not leave politics and would continue his battle in subsequent elections.
Mr Lammy told the Tottenham and Wood Green Independent that he was particularly pleased given he was open with voters that he would try and seek the nomination for Mayor of London.
He said: “I am overwhelmed to be given the largest majority of a Tottenham MP for a generation, and very pleased because I was very open with my voters that I would try and seek the nomination for London mayor. I am delighted they have given me a resounding yes.
“We have had some difficult times over the last five years, particularly in reflecting back to the 2011 riots. It’s been a very difficult time in relation to unemployment and housing, which is the number one issue people raise.
“I will continue to oppose measures of central government not in the interests of my constituents.”
