The new, revised Enfield cycle scheme has now gone to Cabinet for approval on 10th February 2016.

The amended A105 cycle scheme, a part of the regeneration of Enfield program, saw a large number of responses from Enfield citizens, prompting enthusiasm for the scheme.

However, certain parts of the scheme raised concern for a certain fraction of citizens, especially in the Southgate and Green-Lanes area, where MP Bowie of the Conservative party, carried out a ‘referendum’, which saw 87% of participants vote NO for the scheme.

But, Enfield council has reported an enthusiastic response from the 3,400 people who participated in the recent Enfield and Southbury consultations on the cycling scheme.

The revised A105 Cycle Enfield proposals going to Cabinet for decision, will, if approved, create enhanced town centres in Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill with improved public spaces, less street clutter, safer junctions, a more cycle and pedestrian-friendly environment and extra car spaces, including some free 30 minute parking and additional zebra crossings,” said Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson.
”These major improvements are all designed to create vibrant town centres – which encourage people to shop locally.”

The revisions to the original proposal include: moving parking bays to the outside of the cycle lanes to give extra protection to cyclists; introducing additional zebra crossing by Regency Court on Park Avenue and by St Monica’s Church; and adjusting some bus stop proposals in response to views from the community.

Cllr Anderson was delighted with the recent public response – saying: “There was a huge amount of interest in both schemes and we are delighted that so many people took the time to tell us what they thought of our draft proposals. “As we have always said we will listen carefully to what people have told us and revise the plans to best meet the community’s needs – as we have done with our proposals for Palmers Green.”

An independent commission, established by Enfield council, will be active to address any concerns of the town’s businesses.
