Enfield firefighters cooked Turkey for family whose kitchen went up in flames, saving family’s Christmas.

On Christmas day, 12:30pm the family who live on Park Avenue, Bush Hill Park, called the fire-brigade to their home after the oven caught fire, covering the kitchen, causing danger for the lives’ of all family members. Firefighters, after putting out the flames, offered a flame to cook the family’s Turkey, picked up by the family at Edmonton fire station.

“We were called to this terraced house, where we found a family stood quite calmly outside. We went inside and saw they had laid their dinner table out for Christmas,” said Adam Baker, station manager on duty on Christmas day…

“Their cooker, which was a gas oven, the fat had built up inside and had caught fire while they were cooking their turkey. Fortunately it was a slow burning fire and we could put it out, otherwise it could have set the whole kitchen alight…

“We asked them if they knew anyone else who could cook for them, but they said they didn’t know anyone in the area. So, in a split second decision, I said we were cooking our own dinner at the station, and offered to take their food too…

“The other firefighters thought I was joking, but we took it, cooked it, and they picked it up at around 3.30pm.”

“They were really surprised, but very grateful. Their mum kept on trying to give us chocolates and whisky, which we couldn’t really take as we were on duty…

“We’re not heartless, we’re here to help. They are just a typical family who had a fire at Christmas.”
