YOUNG WOMEN have been the most admitted casualties to accident and emergency for alcohol poisoning as figures have doubled in the last six years, the Nuffield trust has revealed.

Women aged 15 to 19 were admitted 40% more than males in the same category. Admissions into hospitals due to alcohol related disease, such as liver disease, have risen by 50% in the last nine years.

Usually caused by drinking too much alcohol in a short period of time, alcohol poisoning makes up 50% of attendances into the A&E.

The already stretched out resources are strained even further by 75% of alcohol related emergencies arrive by ambulance.

Nuffield trust revealed that rates were highest among the most deprived areas.

“With the Christmas party season in full swing, it’s worth considering the full burden over-indulgence in alcohol is placing on our NHS, as well as the obvious human cost, said Claire Currie, Joint author of the report.

The government has banned lowest priced drinks. One in five adults say do not drink alcohol at all; but the problem still persists and continues to rise.
