Fans of European football will have to pay £5 per month to watch the matches on television from next season.

BT Sport, which has assumed the rights for both the Champions League and Europa League from next season, will charge its broadband customers the fee to watch Champions League matches, which will be fronted by BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker.

The telecoms giant will screen 351 matches from the top European club competition and the Europa League after paying £897 million for a three-year deal.

Steven Gerrard, Harry Redknapp and Glenn Hoddle have all been signed on as pundits for the network, joining the existing team of Michael Owen and Steve McManaman.

BT’s 7.7 million broadband customers will have to pay £5/month for the Champions League matches, except those who already have the BT TV platform, for whom the European games will be free.

Sky customers without BT broadband currently have to pay £13.50 a month for BT Sport. This seems likely to rise by around £5 for next season with the addition of European football, though the figure has yet to be announced.
