Hornsey and Wood Green has a new member of parliament
Labour claimed Hornsey and Wood Green from the Liberal Democrats in a result that sent Catherine West to parliament.
The former leader of Islington Council was elected with a majority of more than 11,000, overturning Lynne Featherstone’s majority of nearly 7000.
Speaking to the crowd at Alexandra Palace after the result was announced, Ms West said: “We will not give up, we will continue the fight to protect our NHS and defend people with disabilities.
“We will fight to scrap the bedroom tax and we will fight for a fairer future for our young people.
“I have put my heart and soul into it. I want to say thank you.”
Ms Featherstone came second with 18,359 votes, ahead of the third place Conservatives and Green Party in fourth.
Ms West later told the Haringey Independent: “The way we have campaigned has really cut through. Having lots of young people on the campaign, it’s felt as though we have managed to maintain that pace.”
She said the Lib Dems lost of a lot of their volunteers after entering the coalition with the Conservatives in 2010, which affected their campaign.
