The 99th anniversary of Republic Day celebrated with joy in London

Hundreds of members of the London Turkish Speaking community celebrated the 99th anniversary of Turkey’s Republic Day in London o Friday evening (October 28th).

The Federation of Turkish Associations UK (ITDF) once again organised their annual Republic Dinner and Dance bringing members from across the community together to celebrate and remember the foundations of which the Republic of Turkey was established.

Welcoming guest ITDF chair Jale Ozer Swailes said “Today, we gathered here to celebrate two treasures we cherish and respect: Atatürk and the Republic of Turkey. As we celebrate the 99th anniversary of the founding of our Republic with great enthusiasm, honor and pride; it is our belief that the Turkish nation will re-create the founding philosophy of 1923. This is the most important national holiday for our nation. Happy Republic Day to all!!”

Going on to say “As a British Turkish Community, we are duty bound to play our part defending our secular Republic and its achievements. We should inform the British public why it will be to their advantage to maintain the achievements of our modern and secular republic. We should strengthen Anglo –Turkish friendship and make valuable contributions to Great Britain in political, cultural and economic fields. As a strong and united umbrella organization, The Federation of Turkish Associations will perform its activities along these objectives and continue to be the voice of the British –Turkish community in the UK…”

Mayor of Southwark Sunil Chopra

Also speaking at the event was the Mayor of Southwark Sunil Chopra wished everyone a happy Republic Day, touching on his personal connection to Turkey with his travels and enjoyment of the food in 2016 Mayor Chopra signed a sister city agreement with Beşiktaş and expressed that he aims to continue working with the Turkish Community.

Naval Amiral Türker Ertürk took a moment to detail the history of Republic Day and how the history and ideologies still are relevant today as they were 99 years ago. Awards were given to archaeological Dr Duygu Çamurcuoğlu, Dr Ali Tekin Atalar and others for their contributions to the community.

Live performances were given throughout the night by Özgür Canyurt, Benan Ayvaz and Hoş Seda Choir, while guests enjoyed food and drinks at Grand Palace Banqueting Suite in north London.
