The 31st anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was celebrated in London with a ceremony at the Turkish Cypriot representative’s office.
Representative Oya Tuncalı said during the reception that Turkish Cypriots continued to work towards a federation with two zones and two communities on the island. She said the Greek Cypriot side had – by withdrawing from the negotiation table – demonstrated an attitude that opposed a solution and that, having acquired European Union membership, they were in no mood to share the power they had obtained with Turkish Cypriots.
She said the constructive attitude of Turkish Cypriots needed a response from both the Greek side and the international community, adding: “The island’s energy resources belong to the Cypriot Turks as well. But the Greeks are unable to accept this. It is unacceptable for them to suspend the negotiations. The international community must pressure the Greeks to restart the talks without presenting any preconditions.”
“Our struggle for a more just solution and a better future will continue. Long live the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
Among those attending the reception hosted by Tuncalı at the Hyatt Rgency Churchill Hotel was Turkey’s London ambassador Abdurrahman Bilgiç; and the Turkish land forces commander Hulusi Akar, who was in London with his wife. Also present was Lambeth Mayor Adedamola Aminu and Tower Hamlets spokesman Abdul Chunu Mukit.
