A CONSTRUCTION apprentice has been awarded for a strong worth ethic and contribution to the Turkish community.

Murat Güner, 17, scooped the Apprenticeship Investment in the Community award for his work with Hackney Homes, where he is a second ear apprentice.

“I really did not expect to win,” he said. “I’m really proud of my award because I like to make a difference and help Turkish residents who have language difficulties.”

Murat was one of 20 construction apprentices who spent a week working alongside senior Hackney Homes managers and construction companies like Mulalleys, Mansell and Lakehouse earlier this month.

After the week of mentoring, the apprentices celebrated their achievements at the Picturehouse, Mare Street where they were presented with certificates and awards.

Murat was recognised for “his strong work ethic and contribution towards the Turkish community”, a statement from Hackney Homes said. The runner-up award went to Castlepoint apprentice Liam Roberts.

Hackney councillor Philip Glanville, the cabinet member for Hackney Homes said: “We are committed to creating job opportunities for young people from across the diverse communities who live in Hackney and the Hackney Homes apprenticeship scheme is a good way to do this.”

He continued: “It’s great to see the progression of such committed young people as they work hard to achieve their goals, gaining valuable skills whilst helping to make a difference to local residents.”
