I hate to admit this, yet as our lives go on from day to day, the internet and social media has wormed itself into us in a way we cannot cure. The weekend just gone it was my 25th birthday, a handful of texts, almost a hundred Facebook messages and wait for it… Just two telephone calls, that’s right, just two. Was one surprised, honestly? Yes, because no matter what I will always attempt to carry out all three and if not then at least two from the list. So, what does this show? The fact that social media is seen more than an acceptable way of contacting someone or sending wishes on important days, is concerning. Or that my eyes should open to those around me. My answer correctly, is both.

When it comes to the world of social media, I put my hands up of being a guilty user. I blog (only recently), tweet, Facebook and Instagram daily, it’s like a food we have to consume. Should we not, our day will be like a child’s without their bedtime story that night- it’s just not right is it? Tweet is the sound a bird makes, Face is what we see in the mirror and books are what we read. It seems funny, but these are the meanings we have always known them as until social media took its toll. So why is it that this is such an addiction? We’ve been reeled into a world where tweeting, Facebook posts and Instagram is recording what goes on in our everyday lives.

How you feel, what you ate for lunch, where you are, a photo of you on your last holiday on Instagram, the word privacy becomes a needle in a haystack. You allow it to be stolen, taken away from you, unless your settings are set to private but then what’s the point of your hashtags? That’s a whole new piece of this puzzle we fit together, hash-tag it so it spreads across the network, the more people see it the more they will become aware of what is going on. It’s a realm where our life has become statuses, photos, re-tweets and #tags, yet we enjoy it more than we realise.

A diary we have to write in, post in, put a photo up, show our ‘friends’ list what we’re doing and see how many ‘likes’ we get, it sometimes really seems sad. What’s the point? Can’t the people who say they’re my ‘friends’ pick up the phone and call, drive past for a coffee and see how I am? Or even send a text once a week? Nowadays with social media, it’s way too much to ask, “I’ve liked your post haven’t I? What more do you want?” will probably be the answer you get, so don’t bother!

For more likes, #tags and comments, please sign into Facebook, re-tweet and carry on posting on Instagram…

Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are all available to download as free apps on iPhone and Android. Enjoy!
