2004.

Social Media.

A new website.

Facebook, a network which some would say has become an ‘essential’ part of our everyday lives.

Earlier this week the worldwide network celebrated its 10th birthday, a whole decade since it began infusing itself into our every move.

Here are 10 reasons why we love the wacky world of Facebook…

10. Networking

It’s a bigger social network than we can imagine, when it comes to sharing information on events, businesses and unfortunately even your private life, you can certainly rely on Facebook. A social media where information can spread as quickly as The Plague, maybe even quicker.

9. Easy access

It’s available right at your finger tips, whether you’re at a computer, on your phone or a tablet, as long as you have WiFi or 3 or 4G connection, Facebook will be a click away. Easily accessed and even secured with the new measures constantly coming into place.

8. No cost

It’s FREE, don’t we all love things that are free? Food, clothes (that would be the day), sharing our own piece of mind? Facebook allows us to share what we want, when we want, how we want and not only with your friends but with people all over the world- if you set your profile to ‘Public’. Crazy but true and the best thing about all of this is you don’t have to pay a penny.

7. Friends

We found old friends and discovered new ones, did we not? ‘Friends’ on Facebook, the search tool has allowed us to find friends that we haven’t seen in so long we wonder if they still look the same. Are they okay? Where are they studying? Have they gotten married and had children or is he/she exactly the same as you last remember them?

6. Connection

Connecting with one another. Facebook created a new world of communication with every corner of the world. As the number of friends grew on profiles, conversations progressed from wall to wall and we saw how each other was just by looking at their profile picture or the new album of photos they uploaded.

5. Organise Events

Event organising has become a whole lot easier, click on the events section, create a new event, write in the time, location and date, then click on the friends you’d like to invite. They can join, decline or even pick maybe if they aren’t sure whether they’ll be able to make it, no money spent on invitations, no time wasted in calling everyone, all sorted within the few clicks of a button.

4. We ‘Like’, ‘Poke’, ‘Comment’ and ‘Block’ each other.

Facebook has become a network where words such as the ones above have a taken on a whole new meaning. “He liked it”, “I have a 100 likes already” and of course the list goes on and on. The more likes we have, the more ‘popular’ we feel, the more ‘comments’ we have the more ‘liked’, it’s an on-going circle of actions in a social media world.

3. We share our lives

Almost everyone on Facebook shares their life, this could be by a simple status, a check-in (of where you are) or a 180 photos of your summer holiday. It doesn’t matter, because whatever it is that you’re sharing have no doubt that all your friends will see it, like it, comment on it and if you’re really lucky maybe share it. Call it a diary, a rant, a personal account or whatever else you like, you will post it on Facebook and pretty much everyone will see it.

2. It informs us

Not only are we informed about our ‘family’ or ‘friends’, but pretty much about everything else that’s going on in the world. With almost a 150 million users at present, there isn’t much you can miss, this could be a news story, a planned protest or a video to brighten your day. Whatever it is you’re looking for it’s on Facebook.

1. We are thought of, sometimes..

With the continuous updates and changing security measures it does show that the users are thought about. The nicest thing it’s ever done? A personal video of our journey on Facebook, to celebrate 10 years and show us our Facebook journey so far.

Happy Birthday Facebook, here’s to many more years of blueness!
