On Saturday, March 29, 2025, members of London’s Turkish-speaking community gathered in a demonstration to express solidarity with Istanbul’s detained mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu. The protest took place in the heart of the city, drawing hundreds who sought to voice their support for İmamoğlu and concern over recent political developments in Turkey.
Demonstrators assembled at Trafalgar Square, holding banners and chanting slogans that called for justice and the immediate release of İmamoğlu. The atmosphere was one of unity and determination, as participants from various backgrounds within the Turkish diaspora came together to stand against what they perceive as political repression.
The arrest of İmamoğlu on charges of corruption and alleged links to terrorist organizations has sparked protests not only in Turkey, but also among Turkish communities abroad. The march on Saturday marked İmamoğlu ten day since he’s arrest and the 3rd protest organised in London with members of the Turkish-speaking community gathered calling for his release.
In London, speakers at the march emphasized the importance of democratic values and the rule of law. They highlighted concerns over ‘the erosion of judicial independence in Turkey and called upon the international community to pay closer attention to the situation’.
