The Council of Turkish Cypriot Associations (CTCA) will next month visit a Turkish town that was blighted by a mining disaster.
More than 300 miners were killed at a coal mine in the town of Soma, near Manisa in western Turkey, when a fire broke out two kilometres below the surface and raged for two full days.
Many miners suffocated after being trapped underground.
The CTCA representatives in Soma will be led on 15 January by president Aysın Yılmaz, directors Leyla Kemal and Duygu Tağmaç and the journalist Mehmet Taisi Güzel. They will be paying for their trip themselves and will be donating the £3684 collected so far in the CTCA’s special bank account, plus any improvements on the figure.
Anyone wanting to make a donation to the fund can do so by using the following details for an account at Turkish Bank under the name “CTCA UK”: Account number 08296828, Sort Code: 40-51-98, Swift Code: TUBAGB2L, Iban NO: GB16TUBA40519808296828
