Two weeks in and I’ve seen a great load of matches. From 1-0 up to losing 5-1 to a penalty being granted with 20 seconds play time left… What a World Cup 2014 has shown in the last fortnight. Despite Turkey once again not qualifying, there have been some fantastic games and without a doubt several if not all 90 minutes of quality football..

It’s funny that I’m female and have such passion for the sport, (Dad, thank you it’s all down to you :)) I can’t help love watching and even at times debating about football.

Yes, hand on heart there are definitely things I don’t agree with when it comes to football. However, this column is to be a positive one on the sport and particularly about a very exciting World Cup so far.

One of my favourite matches has to be watching Brazil vs. Mexico, two teams, one being the host of the competition and the other being a team who hasn’t ever won a World Cup. The full 90 minutes of that match, I watched on the edge of my seat. There were no goals scored by either team, but there was workmanship, professional skills and passion throughout the game. It was brilliant to see such determination from both teams as they gave it their all for their countries.

One thing about this World Cup is the historical moments, which have been made in only the last fortnight… So what are some of them?

1. Greece scored their first ever goals in the World Cup competitions they’ve played (against Ivory Coast) in their history..

2. Columbia substituted their uninjured goalkeeper and as Faryd Mondragon came on, he came the oldest ever player to compete in the FIFA World Cup.

3. 70 million people have connected with official World Cup content from a mobile device to make up 51% of the audience.

4. It’s the first ever World Cup to have a Twitter poll and various #tags including #JOININ and #WorldCup, technology hey?

5. Defeating champions Spain and previous champions Italy are both out from the first round- that’s certainly an unexpected surprise!

Those are just few of many…

My all time favourite game up to now has to be Netherlands and Australia. As Robben scored to make it 1-0, I didn’t have the chance to finish cheering.. (Dutch have my support this World Cup) An equaliser came within the space of a minute from Tim Cahill, what stunning goals from both sides… It finished at a great 3-2 and the soccer-loving Aussies said goodbye to the competition.

My heart is with the Netherlands and I hope they will see themselves through to the final…

Good luck to all the teams!  And readers, enjoy competition that is making and will make more historical moments…
