Cllr Claire Kober, Leader of Haringey Council, published a press statement reflecting upon the council’s budget priorities and what can be done to avoid disappointments. In her statement, she said:

“This week sparks the start of a month-long conversation with residents, businesses and partners on the council’s financial challenges.

Since 2010, as many of you will be aware and no doubt had direct experience of, the Government has cut our budget in real terms by 40%. At the same time we are spending more in areas like adult social care and emergency housing because the number of people who need support is on the increase.

All this means that, in the coming years, we need to make further savings on top of the £160 million delivered since 2010. The council is much smaller now. We have 45% less staff and occupy 12 fewer buildings. As we continue to change it is more important than ever that we achieve the best possible value for money for every pound we spend, and to make sure we are spending our budget on the things that really make a difference.

Haringey is an enormously exciting place to live, work or visit and I am hugely proud of all that we have delivered together over the last few years.  The ongoing budget pressures make the challenge of continued improvement harder but I am confident that by working together we can achieve it.”
