Pro-EU campaigners protested the wakes of Brexit

Demands for a second EU referendum will be debated in Parliament on the 5^th of September, after a petition appealing for a second poll attracted more than four million signatures.

MPs debated calls for the referendum to be re-run on the grounds that neither side of the vote won more than 60 per cent and the turnout was below 75 per cent.

The protestors demanded a “pause” to exiting the European Union despite June’s Brexit vote. Unhappy marchers also demanded that Britain keeps “close ties” with Europe and that the public are informed and consulted on the Brexit process.

The marches came on the anniversary of the start of the Second World War and ahead of a debate in parliament on Monday if there should be a second referendum. London, Birmingham, Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh will see protestors parade through the streets waving EU flags and holding placards.

The protestors are backed by co-leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas, Labour’s Chuka Umunna and comedians Josie Long and Eddie Izzard.

Ms Lucas attacked PM Theresa May’s claim that “Brexit means Brexit” arguing that the slogan means nothing until the terms of the exit are known.
