In July 2014, the Centre of Kurdish Progress was formed by a group of academics and earlier this week in Parliament at the Jubilee Room, a reception at 7.00pm was held and awards were given to the successful Kurdish Women.

The reception also included members of the House of Lords, British MPs, Head of Councils and several members of the council filling the room with people.

Speeches were made by MPs Joan Ryan, Kate Osamor, Siobhain Mcdonagh, Baroness Jan Royall and Head of Redbridge Council Barbara White alongside several other council members from various London areas. They thanked the Centre for Kurdish Progress for making them aware of the success of Kurdish Women.

The award winners were chosen and given out by directors of the Centre for Kurdish Progress who formed a jury of five people and also took into consideration opinions of members of the public while choosing.

Last week Enfield North Labour Party MP Joan Ryan attended an event by Ozgur Rojava Woman Charity and met with battling women. In her speech she said: “I am proud of the Kurdish Women who are fighting for their community. We must make their voices heard in England.”

The award ceremony which began at 7pm and lasted for two hours was filled with applause. The ceremony hosted by Joan Ryan also saw women from Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria and Kurdish women attend the reception too.

The first speaker from the House of Lords was Baroness Jan Royall, she said: “No matter which countries the Kurdish Women come from but fight for defending their community by being in the army or in battle shows their bravery. The young Kurdish people and women who we have met with here are giving assistance and advice, by doing so they are giving unbelievable support to women all around the world. I would like to thank all the women who are here and want you to know that I’m proud of you all.”

Joan Ryan who held the room in Parliament herself was applauded as she entered and explained that she wants to see women in the directors of big companies, I want you all to have the right to share your voice.

She explained that last week she came together with the women who are battling Rojova and said: “I met with the Kurdish Women who are fighting in Rojava. They have resorted  to weapons to defend their children, for freedom and democracy. Normal and down to earth women. If I was in their situation, I couldn’t do what they have done. I admire the bravery of women at war or who battle. They are fighting against ISIS so they aren’t made to be slaves in Kobane. They are very noble women. We must be the voice of the Kurdish Women who are putting their lives on the line.”

Joan Ryan also spoke of the happenings in Syria and said that in rulings there is equalness with one man and one woman and recommended that they should give support by networking. She also thanked the Centre of Kurdish Progress for making possible the communication between the peoples of the communities.

After Joan Ryan, MP for Edmonton Kate Osamor reminded everyone that she is in an area where there is a wide Kurdish population and she is an MP there, she continued by saying: “Kurdish Women are in my heart and I promise to do all I can for them.
