ENFIELD COUNCIL held their ‘Stop Smoking’ campaign, at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre’s Asda last afternoon.
The campaign set up by Julie Boyd, who was a smoker for several years received great attention and interest from shoppers. Julie has not smoked for four years, organised the event to offer free advice and information for smokers to help them stop.
“We are very pleased at the outcome from shoppers who have stopped to find out about the campaign and collect information.” said campaigners.
English and Turkish comedy performances gave a light-hearted feel to the serious topic,. Turkish Cypriot Comedian, Osman Balikcioglu also took part in the comedy on stage. The campaign was also an introduction of Stoptober giving information on ‘Stop Smoking’ month and how it has helped so many people all over the country give up the addiction.
Cllr Nneka Keazor, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health & Sport said: “Smokers who quit the habit are giving themselves the best gift. No longer needing to smoke, they save money, feel fitter, enjoy tasty food and live longer.
“You join too! Be part of a Healthy Enfield” was the slogan inviting residents to a new healthy life. The stand set up gave shoppers the chance to find out about health problems caused by smoking. There was also information on how it can affect people financially along with support from campaigners.
She added: “In Enfield smoking is becoming increasingly unpopular with about 5,000 fewer people smoking than there were two years ago. The challenge now is to reduce the number of people smoking even further.”
In 2007, the UK passed the ‘No Smoking Ban’ where smoking was banned indoors, this included all public places including restaurants, bars, nightclubs, leisure centers and even pubs. To make our surroundings even more smoke free, a new ban is to be put in place.
As of Thursday 1 October 2015, drivers who are traveling with children are to be banned from smoking inside their vehicle. This ban comes to stop influencing teenagers younger than 18 and children to start smoking. Should any driver be caught smoking inside the car while a child or person younger than 18 is present, they will be issued a fine of £50.
