Family of Turkish restaurant owner who died in hospital says overcrowded North Middlesex ‘was negligent’ in treating him

Murat MiddlesexBy Burak Gülşen

The family of a Turkish restaurant owner who died in North Middlesex Hospital have claimed he died as a result of negligent treatment.

Murat Alaboğaz, 30, died on Tuesday last week as a result of complications in his pancreas after being admitted the previous night with crippling pains in his abdomen.

But his family told Londra Gazete that he had been discharged four days previously with a related complication and that clinicians at North Middlesex were still keeping him waiting on a bed in a corridor hours before he died.

His uncle Salman Ganidağlı told us: “The hospital was extremely the busy. There were people coming and going all the time. We couldn’t find a doctor to attend to my cousin – there were only nurses coming to check on him. He spent the whole time crying with pain.

“We tried to find him a room but they told us there was no place for him.”

He said Mr Alaboğaz was discharged from the same hospital a matter of days previously after being prescribed a round of painkillers.

“If somebody is admitted to hospital ten days ago and has been observed as recently as three days ago, if that person is discharged as ‘healthy’ and that person dies a few days later, I would of course hold the hospital responsible.”

Murat Alaboğaz came to Britain as a student nine years ago and remained in the country after setting up a business under the terms of the Ankara Agreement. He had been naturalised as a UK citizen and, in a cruel twist of fate, his first British passport arrived at his home by post the day after he died.

His wife and children live in Turkey, and he became a father again four days after he passed away.

A spokeswoman for North Middlesex NHS Trust said:

“It is not appropriate to comment specifically about Mr Alaboğaz’s treatment. We will carry out a full and thorough investigation of the circumstances that led to his death and will share these findings with his family.

“The Trust would like to offer our most sincere condolences to Mr Alaboğaz’s family at this sad time.”
