Birkan Uzun a young Turkish Cypriot reached the summit of the large mountain massif in Antarctica.

At 4,892 metres (16,050 ft) It lies in the north part of Vinson Massif’s summit plateau in the south Pole, during the summer season, November through January, there are 24 hours of sunlight, while the average temperature during these months is −30 °C.

In a social media post, Birkan posted himself at the summit placing the flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) saying:  “Vinson Massif Summit! On December 16, 2021 I stood on the summit of Vinson Massif, the highest point (16,050 ft) in Antarctica, successfully completing the fifth leg of my Seven Summits project. This time, I was honoring my beloved grandfather, Celal Sirkecioğlu, who passed away this year, and representing my home country, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It was a privilege to be the first Turkish Cypriot and Cypriot to be on that summit, and hopefully motivate many of my fellow citizens that with drive, determination, and heart, every goal is possible! The climb was not easy with extreme cold, gusting winds, and severe back pain due to spine surgery last year, but that’s just the small price you pay to be there. I got the job done, and I’m proud. Big thank you to family, friends, and my dear sponsors!”
