Flood alerts have been placed across parts of London with intense rainfall expected on Tuesday amid the ongoing heatwave.
Areas in and around the capital could see flooding during this afternoon’s downpour with heavy rain forecast for around 3pm.
Last Tuesday, flash flooding wreaked havoc in Notting Hill, damaging shops, homes and railways in west London.
The government has issued 11 flood alerts warning for Londoners to be prepared but no warnings or severe warnings have been made. The exact locations are listed below
“While uncertainty remains around exact timings and which areas will experience the heaviest rain, there is a possibility that rivers could respond quickly and overtop their banks,” a Flood Information Service spokesperson said.
“Flooding to low lying land, roads and riverside gardens is possible. Surface water flooding may also affect low lying areas.
“We recommend you monitor local weather conditions. You should avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.
“We are monitoring rainfall and river levels and are checking rivers for blockages.”
The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning covering central and southeast England, which is set to bear the brunt of thundery downpours and lightning.
An amber rain warning has also been issued for London and the south east which will apply from 1pm until midnight.
A Met office spokesperson said: “Although many areas will miss the downpours, thunderstorms are likely to develop in the area bringing torrential rain, frequent lightning, large hail and gusty winds.
“Where the heavy rain does fall could see between 20-30mm of rain within 1-2 hours.”
