A groundbreaking public square and amphitheatre could become the heart of north Tottenham’s community life as part of regeneration proposals launched this week.

Designs by Haringey Council for the High Road West area could see an expansive public space, with room for community events, pop-up screenings and a space for people to meet and relax.

The square could be surrounded by a new library and enterprise centre, green space and clusters of modern homes for existing residents and to help more families get a foot on the housing ladder.

Highlights of the plans include:

  • A 5,000 square metre open public space, with an amphitheatre for community events and a new library and enterprise centre, surrounded by cafes, bars and restaurants
  • 1,200 new homes, with a mix of family houses with gardens and flats and maisonettes with private courtyards
  • A new park in a residential quarter north of the High Road, with children’s play space, a free-to-use outdoor gym and space to relax
  • A more accessible White Hart Lane Station, with improved train services and a modern entrance at the south of the platform
  • Purpose-built modern industrial units for start-up businesses to grow into, with a better mix of shops on the High Road and support to find work

The designs build on initial consultation with the community last year, and the more detailed plans are based directly on feedback received through forms, public meetings and workshops with architects.

Under the proposals, all secure council tenants on the Love Lane Estate would be guaranteed a home in the new development, with the council aiming to phase the work so residents only have to make one move – with their neighbours – into their new home.

Hundreds of local people living on the Love Lane Estate joined together last week for a fun activity day to launch the consultation, while the former Grange Centre on White Hart Lane has reopened as a dedicated community hub for residents and traders to view an exhibition of the plans and ask questions.

Councillor Alan Strickland, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, said: “We’re determined that every family in Haringey should have the high-quality housing, support to find work and transport links they need to fulfil their potential, and these exciting proposals support that ambition.

“Residents have been clear that they want open space at the heart of the community, and we’re determined to bring the first-class public spaces that go hand-in-hand with proposals for new housing.”

“We’ve listened closely to what residents and businesses had to say about our initial ideas and spent the last year fine-tuning the designs at drop-in events, fun days and workshops.

“I share residents’ passion to use this once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform our community for the better, and I hope that as many people as possible have their say.”
