Statement by the consulate regarding assets owned abroad

A statement has been made by Consul General Çınar Ergin regarding the subject as to whether the assets in Turkey of the Turkish community living abroad will be examined or not.

Turkey’s Consul General in London, Ergin, attended a dinner gathered with citizens and answered many different questions. The participant responded, seeking answers to allegations that expatriates living in the UK and receiving social assistance from the state would be examined for assets in Turkey.

The Consul General said that citizens living in the United Kingdom were disturbed by reports that assets in Turkey would be investigated and informed by the British tax authorities. Mentioning that these allegations do not reflect the truth, Ergin said: “First of all I assure you that no citizen of ours has the situation that no property in Turkey is notified to England.

There is no such order and instructions. We do not know where these are coming from, but even if we do, we are not able to do such a thing as a consulate unless there is a court decision. Therefore, citizens shouldn’t worry. I will follow this up and share it with our citizens again. The information we have is not healthy information but I would like to ask you to be at least comfortable as a consulate general.
