The 67 trainees, who were all teachers of different subjects, were enrolled on the 10-day programme that aimed to raised Turkish language teaching standards.

It was jointly organised by Sakarya University and the London Turkish Schools Education Consortium, coordinated by Kelami Dedezade and Özlem Hüroğlu Engür.

There were a number of high profile lecturers during the course, including Professor Mustafa Kaçalin, head of the Turkish Language Association (TDK) and Professor Hayati Develi, head of the Yunus Emre Institute where the course was held.

At the graduation ceremony on Saturday, the trainees were presented with certificates by Mr Develi and Emirhan Yorulmaz, the Turkish consul-general in London.

Mr Yorulmaz said courses like these were extremely important and would continue with the support of the Turkish Consulate.

Professir İsmail Güleç, the head of Sakarya University’s Education Sciences Institute that helped organise the project, said they were proud to have organised a course like this.

“If we have been able to make even a small contribution to Turkish schools, then we are happy. I hope courses like these will continue in the future.”

Other speakers for the programmes included Professor Murat Özbay and Dr Tözün İsa, both from Gazi University in Ankara, and Professor Kutlay Yağmur, who is known from Tilburg University for his work on bilingualism.
