The celebration event for the upcoming spring, Newroz attracted a lot of attention this year. Both Turkish and Kurdish communities attended celebrations that were organized around London
In Woodgreen -a place heavily populated by Turkish-Kurdish citizens more than 600 people attended the event. One of the activities in the celebration was a march, headed to the Kurdish Citizen Centre in Haringey. After the arrival, the crowd celebrated this special day with halay, an authentic folk dance. In the program that followed the march Serhado, Koma Zelal, Birgül Yılmaz, Koma Sersi cheered the crowd with their performances.
Another celebration took place in UCL central London campus. Presented by Suman Kurbanova and Faroz Rizyonov the programme followed an international path. In this light there were many stands in the event hall which were habituated by representatives from different countries, which value Newroz and the idea behind it. The representatives were from countries like Iraq, Turkmenistan, Uighur, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan…
A feast was another exciting feature of the program. Attendee’s were offered examples from different cuisines. Nazım Onay and academician Dr. Erdem Özdemir sang a folkloric song named “Çılpınırdı Karadeniz” -an impressive performance, which was followed by a long period of applause.
Atilla Abacıoglu, president of “Turkish World UK” association which provides a channel through which different Turkish associations can communicate, commented on the event. He expressed his satisfaction and delight of the level of attendance.
At the end of this day, Kurdish-Turkish associations announced that the upcoming “Great Newroz event” will be organized on 10th of April in Lee Valley.
