Rail routes crossing through some of London’s most Turkish districts will be transformed after becoming part of London Overground this weekend.
Fares will fall by as much as 40 per cent on some journeys when Transport for London assumes control of the lines, which serve stations in Enfield, Edmonton and Tottenham.
Boris Johnson said it was “fantastic news” for commuters.
Current operator Abellio Greater Anglia will relinquish control of services from Liverpool Street to Enfield Town, Cheshunt and Chingford from Sunday 31 May.
TfL says the vast majority of fares will reduce in price while all others will remain unchanged.
For example, a peak time journey from Edmonton Green station in North London to Oxford Circus currently costs £5.40. From next week it will be £3.90.
Single trips to central London will also be cheaper from Bruce Grove, Chingford, Stoke Newington and Theobald’s Grove.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “This is fantastic news for commuters, who won’t just be benefitting from being part of the wonderfully efficient London Overground network, but for many of them their fares will be reduced as well.
“This is a clear demonstration of why it is a no brainer for TfL to be given more control of suburban rail services, enabling more people to reap the benefits of rail devolution.”
TfL said it did not make a profit from fares and that it reinvested all its income to run and improve services for customers.
