Holidaymakers travelling by train to London Stansted Airport faced severe disruption due to planned maintenance.

Works on the Stansted Express service between the airport and London Liverpool Street will take place for five consecutive weekends from Saturday.

Concluding on 23 March, delays have been forecast due to scheduled engineering on rail tracks between Stansted and Broxbourne, in Hertfordshire.

National Express has added additional coaches to its airport services during the consecutive weekends, equating to an extra 25,000 extra seats.

According to Greater Anglia, there will be no direct Stansted to London trains on Saturday and Sunday, as well as on 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23 March.

A replacement bus will shuttle people from Broxbourne, where the Stansted Express will terminate, to and from the airport.

National Express director John Boughton said: “We recognise the significant impact and inconvenience the upcoming rail disruption will have on travellers.”

The company said the following services to the airport – with the additional coaches – would be available:

  • A6 – 44 journeys a day serving Marble Arch, Paddington, Baker Street, St Johns Wood, Finchley Road, Golders Green

  • A7 – 49 journeys a day serving London Victoria Coach Station, Victoria Rail Station, Waterloo, Southwark, Whitechapel, Mile End, Bow

  • A8 – 49 journeys a day serving Kings Cross St Pancras, Farringdon and Barbican,  Tottenham Hale, Liverpool Street, Shoreditch

  • A9 – 48 journeys a day between London Stratford and London Stansted Airport
