Firefighters have urged Londoners to take care after the Met Office issued an amber warning for wildfires.

Even though the city is not experiencing the high temperatures of summer the dry start to spring means blazes can still happen.

Only a small spark is needed to set alight grass, shrubs, or litter – and flames can quickly get out of control.

London Fire Brigade’s Paul McCourt said: “Recent events in Los Angeles and South Korea have demonstrated how rapidly fires can spread outdoors even when temperatures are not at their highest.”

The warning was in place for the rest of the week, he said.

Mr McCourt added: “We would urge Londoners not to have barbecues in open spaces or on balconies, to throw rubbish away, and to dispose of cigarettes carefully.”

Met office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk, said that strong winds and ongoing dry or warm weather “brings a continued likelihood for wildfire conditions” .

There is currently an amber fire danger rating across England including the London area.

Temperatures could reach up to 22C (71F) on Friday, the Met Office predicts.
