Labour put forward Feryal Clark and Nesil Çalışkan for Parliamentary Seats in London.
In the general elections to be held on July 4th in England, Nesil Çalışkan, of Turkish Cypriot descent, and Feryal Clark, of Turkish-Kurdish descent, will be running for parliamentary seats in London under the Labour Party banner.
Enfield Council Leader Nesil Çalışkan has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for the Barking constituency. The London Labour Party stated that Çalışkan was nominated in accordance with party procedures. Çalışkan expressed her happiness, saying, “I am very pleased to be the Labour Party candidate in Barking. Under the leadership of Keir Starmer, the Labour Party is once again serving working people.”
Çalışkan made history in 2018 as the first Muslim woman elected as the leader of Enfield Council, a position she has held since then. Last year, she was also elected as the head of the Labour Party’s Local Government Association. Additionally, Çalışkan is a member of the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). If elected, Nesil Çalışkan will become the first Turkish Cypriot MP in British history.
Feryal Clark, who made history in 2019 as the first Turkish-Kurdish MP representing Enfield North in the UK Parliament, is running for re-election. Before the previous elections, Clark, originally from Malatya/Kürecik, served as the Deputy Mayor of Hackney. She won her seat with 23,340 votes, significantly ahead of her Conservative opponent, Joanne Laban, who received 16,848 votes.
Clark will be looking to secures another term as Enfield North, other candidates running for this constituency also included Turkish Cypriot independent candidate Ertan Karpazlı.
