UBP (National Unity Party) Secretary-General, Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu from The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), delivered a speech at the UK Conservative Party Congress, emphasizing the constructive stance of Turkish Cypriots on the Cyprus issue. Hasipoğlu noted that the UK, as a guarantor country, is well aware of the Turkish Cypriot people’s commitment to a solution.
During his address, Hasipoğlu also discussed the issues and expectations of the approximately 300,000 Turkish Cypriots living in the UK and called for the representation of Turkish Cypriots in the British Parliament.
He emphasized the need for the UK, after Brexit, to take bolder steps in Cyprus politics. Hasipoğlu urged the UK not to harbour any biases and to recognize the Turkish Cypriot people’s constructive approach towards a solution.
Hasipoğlu also touched on TRNC President Ersin Tatar’s call for a solution based on sovereign equality and stressed that this principle is a historical right. He reminded the UK of promises made during the 2004 Annan Plan process and called for concrete steps on issues such as direct flights and the participation of Turkish Cypriot athletes in the Commonwealth Games.
The speech highlighted the importance of the UK’s role as a guarantor country in the Cyprus issue and its potential to contribute positively to the resolution process.
