TALKING to Londra Gazete about her experience studying abroad, Turkish Cypriot Yıldız Akcan says “It is once in a lifetime experience that will help anyone to appreciate other cultures and gain a greater understanding of the world!”
“I am in the final year of Master of Chiropractic course, currently working as a student chiropractor at the AECC Univerity College Clinic as part of my internship.
“I have drawn to study chiropractic after benefiting from the care myself and discovering how chiropractic can help people get well and have an improved quality of life! I love helping and working with people and being able to support them in their health journey and seeing them feeling better and happier is just pure joy to me.
“Moving to the UK from Cyprus has been a great experience, especially living on my own abroad for the first time has taught me a lot. I enjoyed making friends from other nationalities. I love the fact that I had the privilege to learn a lot about British culture and its traditions!”
Studying at the AECC University College in Bournemouth South England while the view may not be the same has her island homeland she is just a stone throw away for the British coast “I love the idyllic location; I feel so lucky to be only 5 minutes away from the amazing sandy beaches and mesmerizing sea views.”
Like every student moving to a new place facing challenges can be expected saying “There are difficulties for every foreign student as well as for us. It takes time to adapt to the lifestyle here. You feel the difference, be it English language, culture, or lifestyle.
However students have faced different challenges over the last two years saying “There are certain difficulties in studying and living in the UK as a Turkish Cypriot. In the past years, the pandemic has had difficulties, especially travelling to Cyprus has become much more difficult, fortunately, it is easier now.”
But added over the benefits outweighs these saying “As a Turkish Cypriot, it is a great advantage that I can study Chiropractic in the UK. I believe that chiropractic will soon become a more widespread area of expertise in our country, as in the UK, and will support our citizens to improve their quality of life and health.”
