‘The Pen and the Letter’ seminar took place at the Yunus Emre Institution

English calligraphist Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob and Spanish Nuria Garcia Masip presented their presentation of traditional Ottoman figures on The 11th of March at the Yunus Emre institution by exposing the secret world to the Ottoman and Islamic calligraphy.

English calligraphist Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob and Spanish Nuria Garcia Masip presented their presentation of traditional Ottoman figures on The 11th of March at the Yunus Emre institution by exposing the secret world to the Ottoman and Islamic calligraphy.

The duo administrated the night by presenting delicate rules of calligraphy by including delicacies to pen holding, pen hewing and the history of Islamic calligraphy.

While Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob was presenting artistic pieces from calligraphy schools Sulus, nesih, muhakkak. Talik, divani and rika, Nuria Garcia Masip pitched her presentation with the topics regarding the importance of proportion and harmony. The duo also demonstrated their skills live through a camera on the background, which made the seminar more engaging.

At the event in which the participation of the audience was a big part of it, the duo also tackled issues on heritage and current activities on calligraphy. Nuria Garcia Masip said ‘it is wonderful to see in a technology driven world there is a contrary movement to get back to the traditional arts; calligraphy leads this flow.’
