A TURKISH CYPRIOT POET has attended an evening presenting poems and sharing warm conversations in London last week on Thursday (10 December).
Neşe Yaşın, the Turkish Cypriot poet was invited by the Cypriot Artists Platform and Turkish Cypriot Democracy Association, who organised the event. Many Greek Cypriots where also among guests who attended the evening.
Ertanç Hidayet ve Ferdi Sedat heads of the associations, both gave opening speeches. They said: “We are very pleased at being able to put on events like these.” They also underlined the fact arts and artists have a large contribution to the period of peace between the South and North side of the island.
They added: “We are also working hard to make these efforts aware to Cypriots living in England as well.”
Neşe Yaşın read her poems in Turkish and English, presenting a repertoire reading of old and new poems she has written. The evening also saw Neşe Yaşın discuss her father Özker Yaşın’s nationalism, a contrast to her views and gave interesting memories from the both of them.
Neşe Yaşın’s famous poem ‘Yurdunu Sevmeliymiş İnsan’ (A Person Must Love Their Motherland) caused emotional moments as the song to the poem was performed in Greek and Turkish.
Guests who attended the evening said they would be very pleased to see more events like this. The importance of young Cypriots also being part of events like these and efforts for this to happen are continuing.
Nafiya Horozuğlu who also was at the evening said: “The works we are doing are very hopeful,” pleasing the guests at the event.”
