Celebrities back bid for second helicopter to serve London
Sir Stirling Moss has joined celebrities Larry Lamb, Twiggy, Richard Branson and Graham Norton to back a London Air Ambulance campaign for a second helicopter.
The former Formula One racing driver, who was born in West Kensington, was treated by the charity’s advanced trauma team when he suffered a fall in his home in 2010.
“I’ve borrowed the services London’s Air Ambulance provides following an accident at home,” he said.
“Thanks to the speed and quality of the care it delivers, I am here today in one piece. For that reason I can wholeheartedly say the team is second to none. I always take a moment to reflect on how different and hard things might have been for my family without the swift intervention of London’s Air Ambulance.
“I’m immensely grateful and proud to support the charity after it helped me in my time of need. The least I can do now is call on other Londoners to join me in supporting its campaign for a second aircraft and help it to save more lives.”
The campaign – called Your London, Your Helicopter – is hoping to raise £6 million, of which £2.2 million is still needed, to buy and run a second emergency medical helicopter and extend its daylight flying hours for five years.
Fashion icon Twiggy had previously said: “I was shocked to find out that London only has one helicopter for life-threatening medical emergencies. When I learnt London’s Air Ambulance needed to raise money for a second helicopter, I wanted to help this life-saving charity in any way I can.”
