ENFIELD Labour MP, Joan Ryan has published a press release in regards to the governments unsuccessful approach towards tackling child poverty and the increase of child poverty specifically in Enfield.
Accordıng to recent figures there has been a shocking result revealing that nearly 40% of Enfield’s children are living in poverty.
Research conducted by the End Child Poverty (ECP) coalition has found that the Borough is the 11th most impoverished area for children in the UK, with almost 34,000 children in Enfield living below the poverty line. Enfield North and Edmonton are also two of the top twenty constituencies in the country with the fastest growing levels of child poverty.
The ECP coalition is calling for an end to the Government’s freeze on children’s benefits, warning that, as prices continue to rise, low income families are finding it increasingly hard to pay for essential goods and services.
Joan Ryan MP states: “I’m proud that under the last Labour Government we lifted 1 million children out of poverty. Under the Conservative Government, however, many families in Enfield and across the country are struggling to put food on the table, heat their homes and clothe their children.
The Government’s failing economic policies have resulted in falling living standards, growing job insecurity and shrinking public services.
Families are being placed under increasing strain and are being held back from the life they have worked towards. I will continue to press for action to tackle child poverty and protect low-income families.”
