Turkish Cyprıot businessman emerges victorious in Turkish Cypriot engineers union elections.
Mr Gürcafer was announced last week as the winner of the vote, which was held on 1 March but delayed owing to discussions that emerged shortly after voting completed.
His team on the board will include Meriç Erülkü, Ceyhun Tunalı, Kemal Aktunç, Redif Nurel, Halil Öncülay and Yakup Tel, while Erdoğan Bekiroğlu and Ayşe Kanlıada were selected as reserve members.
In his acceptance speech Mr Gürcafer said: “We are a family, the question of who has won and who has lost ends here. From now on, let us all unite and work together, without discrimination, to see how we can solve our problems, contribute to our unity and bring peace to the country.”
In relation to the thorny issue of property, he went on to note that Turkish Cypriot expats by far outnumbered those living in North Cyprus and said this had been an inevitable consequence of negative circumstances.
He continued: “Our citizens living abroad deserve the best. We will be working with government officials over the coming period to help resolve the problems experienced even by those who are now in the furthest corners of the world.”
