Winter warning

AUTUMN is here and winter as we all know is only round the corner, so as the freezing breezes set to arrive and our coats come out it can only mean one thing- the heating must be on.

Britain is famous unfortunately for its wet weather and for the past few years the ‘expected’ snow and temperatures dropping to below minus, we can only wear so many layers of clothing in the house. So quite naturally the central heating system is the only solution to keeping us as warm as we can be when off from work and relaxing at home.

It’s no surprise that the announcement of energy bill prices are to surge yet again this winter, British Gas has said they will raise their rates by 9.2 per cent affecting millions of homes right across the country. The energy secretary is said to have demanded a meeting to discuss the ‘unjustifiable’ increase, it seems like a bit of follow the leader as one by one energy companies being to do the same.

An article in The Telegraph Online explains in detail the figures of prices and how exactly gas and electricity will be making changes in costs, “British Gas and SSE has put its prices up by 9.2pc for gas and electricity with effect from November 23. Gas is to increase by 8.4pc and electricity to increase by 10.4pc.” Almost nine per cent for gas and over 10 per cent in electric is a lot higher then it may seem, when your quarterly gas and electric bill is arriving through your door at approximately £200 – £300 more than usual, you’re bound to feel a lot colder too.

I can understand we are in some sort of never-ending economic crisis. Businesses, companies as well those of us at work need to make profit or at least ends meet but as if bills weren’t costly enough already? What gain will these companies have? With exception of making more money, will they be benefiting there customers at all?

The chances of that are of course very slim, do these companies actually want to please us as customers? Because it seems to me each year there is announcement of rises and we frantically look elsewhere for the cheapest company to move to.

The harsh reality of this rise is once again going to a battle for millions of us. I hate to think about the results and how big an affect it will have on countless family homes.

You’d think that rather than causing difficulty, energy companies would be offering some sort of promotions or deals to help make their customers lives that little bit more easier, not making such announcements as winter is ahead of us.

I guess one of the only things we can hope for is the season to come around later rather than sooner.

I’m certainly a winter lover, but this year for the sake of our energy bills, please stay away for as long as you can.
