A COMMUNITY leader has spoken of his an ambitious bid to unite the many Turkish cultural and social associations under one roof.
The Union of European Turkish Democrats in the UK (UETD-UK) , which is led by Mütallip Ünlüer, said that many of the Turkish associations in this country that are formed for political, social, cultural or sportive reasons are forced to close.
That is why, Mr Ünlüer said, the UETD was established with the backing of Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
“UETD-UK is a non-governmental organisation made up of 50 people including workers, shopkeepers, businesspeople, academics and students,” he said.
“Our mission is to harmonise with the country in which we live withiout losing our own national and social values.”
The union is holding a conference on the 28 February 1997 military intervention into Turkish politics. It will be held at the Petchey Academy Hall, Shacklewell Lane, Hackney, E8 2EY on Sunday 2 March between 2-6pm.
