“Turkey’s Coup and Democracy” at Day-Mer

Day-Mer’s panel discussed the coup in turkey and the fall of Turkey’s democracy.

“Turkey’s Coup and Democracy” panel took place this past Sunday (14 August) at the Day-Mer. It was attended by the Director of Evrensel Kültür, Aydın Çubukçu and journalist Mustafa Yalçıner. Almost one-hundred people attended the event which began with Mustafa Yalçıner’s serious and frank discussion about the attempted coup. He said that “Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan used to use the democratic system but now it has been left in the waiting room.” He carried on saying now that it is only Erdoğan’s will as the “only man”; his reconstruction of the political order has accelerated, and he is using the failed coup as a justification for this. After Mustafa Yalçıner finished speaking it was the turn of Aydın Çubukçu, the Director of Evrensel Kültür, who said that there have been lies transmitted about the coup.

Çubukçu said that “America does not swing the Ottoman sword whilst riding the horse.” America will not hesitate to dispense of Erdoğan in order to protect their interests in the region. It goes beyond rhetoric to suggest that the suppression of democracy after the failed coup was a success Çubukçu stated.

Çubukçu said that after the coup there will be blood spilled because fascism has now been allowed to grow. After they stated their opinions the panelists took part in a Q&A session.
