First Meridian Water homes and its new station get planning consent

Enfield Council’s planning committee has given the green light for work to start on the first phase of the £3.5 billion Meridian Water mega development.

The committee agreed on June 28 to the construction of 725 homes, the new Meridian Water railway station serving the project, retail space, community and leisure facilities, play areas, public open spaces and associated infrastructure.

The decision follows Enfield Council’s announcement last month that Barratt and SEGRO had been appointed as the developers for the scheme.

The scheme will ultimately provide 10,000 homes and 6,700 jobs on a waterfront setting in Edmonton and will make a huge contribution to the United Kingdom’s economy, help ease the London housing crisis and dramatically increase the supply of family and affordable housing in Enfield.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Housing Regeneration, Cllr Ahmet Oykener, said: “This is a huge leap forward for Enfield and a gigantic step towards making Meridian Water a reality.

“We can now get boots on the ground and start to turn our vision into a reality. This is a hugely exciting time and this transformational project will make a huge contribution towards tackling the shortage of housing in our borough.”

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration & Business, Cllr Alan Sitkin, said: “Meridian Water will create the jobs and infrastructure which will underpin Enfield’s economy for many years to come.

“It will enable us to help our young people find skilled jobs, reduce unemployment and play an important role in bringing major companies and investment to our borough.

“This is a truly revolutionary scheme which will benefit business, residents and north London as a whole and it is terrific news that planning consent has been granted for the first phase of the project.”

Because of its scope, the project will now be referred to the Greater London Authority to grant planning permission.  The New Meridian Water station is also being prepared to receive Crossrail 2.
