It has just been announced that Yunus Emre Institute will run a one-week intensive hat/calligraphy course in July 2016. The summer intensive course is scheduled for Monday 18th July to Friday 22nd July 2016. The deadline for registration will be on Friday 8th July 2016.
The lessons will start with introductions to the practice of beautiful writing ‘Hüsn-ü Hat’
With Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob, a master in hat and calligraphy art.The short course will introduce the highest form of Islamic art ‘Hüsnühat’ – the practice of beautiful writing according to the Ottoman School of calligraphy. This is a practical introduction to Islamic/Arabic writing and provides participants a step-by-step guide to writing the Arabic letters in the Nesih/Naskh script.
Students will be shown how to construct each letter through basic strokes and learn the traditional practice, tools and materials used for Hüsnühat. You will be encouraged to explore and experiment with the relevant tools, learn to cut and prepare a traditional reed qalam – calligraphy pen, analyse the measurements for the Arabic letters, practice the pen angles from thick to thin strokes and progress through shapes to write out letters
The course is run by Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob, a qualified teacher and Islamic Calligrapher (hattat), authorised and classically trained in Istanbul by the renowned Master Calligrapher Hasan Celebi
The course is open to people of all abilities and backgrounds including those who have an interest in writing. No knowledge of written or spoken Arabic is required. Participants with prior experience of calligraphy can attend.
