| Enfield Council is poised to choose a development partner for the £2.5 billion Meridian Water scheme, which will create 8,000 homes and 3,000 jobs. The mega-development, one of the biggest in London, will transform Edmonton and the wider Lea Valley Corridor, by attracting investment to the area, create thousands of badly needed jobs for local residents and provide the schools, health centres and other facilities its residents will need. Enfield Council’s Cabinet will decide at their meeting on Wednesday (18 May) which of the bidders – Barratts & Segro, Berkeley Homes or Pacific Century Premium Develop & Willmott Dixon – will be appointed as the borough’s development partner following a gruelling selection process.Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing & Housing Regeneration, Cllr Ahmet Oykener, said: “Meridian Water is a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide thousands of badly needed homes for the people of Enfield in a superb waterfront setting.“It is incredibly exciting that we are on the verge of appointing a development partner so that we can start getting boots on the ground and getting on with this transformational project that will transform Edmonton and the wide area and improve the quality of life for tens of thousands of people. ”It will help ease the housing crisis in Enfield, and provide fantastic quality accommodation to many families. It is a truly transformational project which demonstrates Enfield Council’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration & Business, Cllr Alan Sitkin, said: “Meridian Water, put simply, will provide us with the jobs, training and opportunities to life some of our most deprived communities out of poverty by providing good quality employment opportunities in the heart of their community. “It is an aspirational but achieveable scheme which will not only provide an estimated 10,000 construction jobs while building work is taking place but thousands more when the project is completed by providing high quality training opportunities for local people. “Broadly speaking our aspiration is that our existing residents are the primary beneficiaries of the new homes, jobs, training, infrastructure and facilities, Meridian Water is for the people of Edmonton and we’ll be working hard to make sure that the benefit mainly from the growth and prosperity this development will create on their doorstep.” |
