A new twelve- sided one pound coin is to be presented by the Chancellor George Osbourne.
This new coin, planned to be introduced in 2017, will contain the four symbols of the UK: Shamrock, leek, Rose and Thistle. A teenage designer David Pearce, designed the tail side of the coin, winning 1st place in the competition.
The new coin that looks like the old threepenny which was withdrawn in 1971, will replace the current one pound coin due as previously planned a year ago.
It is describe to be the most secure coin in the World – combining the back-notes anti-counterfeiting technology, will be embedded into a coin for the first time. It will have two different coloured metals and 12 edges making it difficult for criminals to forge.
