A WELL KNOWN Turkish writer and journalist Cenghiz Candar, has attended a talk in Palmers Green, North London, where he discussed the Kurdish situation in Turkey isponsored by Kurdishprogress.org and Kurdish Job Creators association.

Speaking to an audience of almost 40 people at the Woodman pub, in Palmers Green, he touched on the importance of the current situation in Turkey and the dangers it poses for the future.

He said: “The war in Syria has spilled over to Turkey… and, even though it is not felt in many western cities, the air in the region is very tense and can soon explode into something devastating.”

“We must remember that no war can last forever – you cannot keep fighting.”

Pressing on the notion that an agreement is a must for nation to survive in any meaningful way, Candar said our idea of a peaceful, Democratic Turkey “looks very unlikely”.

The current situation with between the PKK/the young Kurdish generation and the government has become very unstable and violent: “AKP has lost a whole generation of Kurdish youngsters, who have seen their friends and family killed, tortured, abused and embarrassed; Now, they are fighting with an amazing amount of energy,” said Candar.

The event closed with a call by the veteran journalist for “all that can be done” to get both sides away from the gun and back on to the table.
