TURKISH CYPRIOTS also fought in the Çanakkale War (Turkey’s War of Independence) explain speakers at a celebration event and conference marking the 100th year anniversary.
The conference held by the Jazeera Association saw Head of the Association Mustafa Kureyşi, Jazeera Association Turkey Representative Ertan Karpazlı and member of the Jazeera association Hüseyin Haşim El Bakayi speak at event. Prayers were made for the fallen soldiers in the war, followed by the reading of the Turkish National Anthem. The conference also brought to light that Turkish Cypriots also fought in the war for the independence of Turkey.
THE ROLE OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN THE INDEPENDENCE WAR
Speaking first at the conference was Turkey Representative TRT World journalist Ertan Karpazlı. He explained the role of Turkish Cypriots in the Independence War in 1915 and the 1919 liberty war. Following Ertan Karpazlı, Head of Association Mustafa Kureyşi, spoke of the plan made to save the Turkish Soldiers in Magusa (Famagusta) North Cyprus, when the British began occupying the island.
The last speaker was Hüseyin Haşim El Bakayi, and spoke about the research done dating back as far as 1870 and discussed the population of Muslims and Christians on the island.
