THE NINTH KURDISH FILM FESTIVAL started last weekend on Friday 13 November with a reception at the Picture House in Hackney, East London lasting till Friday
Three hundred guests attended the reception of the film festival on Friday evening and among them guests included Green Party MP Jean Lambert, Hackney Council speaker Sade Etti, Haringey Council speaker Ali Özbek, KRG UK (Kurdish Regional Government) representative Karwan Jamal Tahir, Windows for Peace through Democracy director Margaret Owen, and directors whose films are to be shown at the festival, Hüseyin Karabey, Kenan Korkmaz, Ömer Leventoğlu, Hisham Zaman, Erol Mintaş and Sahim Omar Khalifa.
Speakers at the event expressed the importance of the films being shown will explain the lives of Kurdish people and community.
Aladdin Sinayiç , who is a member of the organisation committee at the London Kurdish Film Festival explained his excitement for the 9th Kurdish Film Festival in London and how pleased he was with the successful right Kurdish Film Festival held up until now in England.
He continued by saying: “Cinema isn’t only a form of art, but alongside this it also the community’s eyes, ears and conscience at the same time. In regards to the Kurdish public this reality gains even more importance. For a population which has suffered pain for years in their country, their cinema is now like a light to the publics pain, hopes, culture, nature, memory and their life completely.”
