David Burrowes said the people of Enfield Southgate wanted a Conservative member of parliament again
David Burrowes was elected to a third successive term as the MP for Enfield Southgate.
The Conservative Party emerged victorious in the constituency, which is home to large numbers of Turkish speakers, despite a slightly reduced majority.
In his victory speech, Mr Burrowes said the people of Enfield Southgate had spoken: “They want a Conservative member of parliament for Enfield Southgate. Not just for five, ten years, but now for fifteen years.
CONSERVATIVES ‘HERE TO STAY’
“The message from the people of Enfield Southgate is that the Conservative Member of Parliament is here to stay.”
He took 22,624 votes at the election, a majority of 4,753 votes over his Labour rival Bambos Charalambous. The two men had also contested the same constituency in the 2010 election, when the difference was 7,626.
Mr Burrowes said he was “committed again to be a member of parliament who loves service rather than power, who is concerned for others and is a strong advocate for an area that I’ve grown up in. It is a great privilege and honour to be able to serve in my local area that I love.”

LABOUR’S ‘HARD WORK’
His rival Bambos Charalambous paid tribute to his Labour team, who had “worked so hard and run a brilliant campaign”.
He continued: “We came close to winning today and whilst I’ve fallen short I want to pay tribute to the many people from all over the constituency who’ve given us their support and put their trust in us to deliver a better plan for them.
“I will make sure the people of Enfield Southgate are not neglected or forgotten and I will make sure David Burrowes is held to account if he ignores the needs of the community.”
ANDY LOVE TRIBUTE
Mr Burrowes used his victory speech to pay tribute to Andy Love, the outgoing Labour MP in Edmonton, for being a “good servant” to Enfield.
He also praised “my trusted colleague Nick de Bois, who has been full of integrity, full of honesty and full of achieving much for borough of Enfield”.
Mr de Bois went on to lose the election in Enfield North to Labour’s Joan Ryan.
Third place in Enfield Southgate went to UKIP’s David Schofield, with 2109 votes, followed by Green candidate Jean Robertson-Molloy with 1690 and the Liberal Democrat Paul Smith on 1518.
