Labour’s shadow education secretary Tristram Hunt has released a YouTube video explaining his earlier pledge on foreign language examinations.
Filmed at a Hindu temple in Stanmore, Mr Hunt is shown meeting members of the local community and discussing their concerns about scrapped language exams.
In the video Mr Hunt says: “Why I’m so angry about the government’s chaotic examination reforms is that it means a whole swathe of languages vital for Britain’s future – Punjabi, Gujarati, Polish, Turkish – risk being eliminated.
“This is where we’re going to succeed in the modern world by being an open, trading, well-educated nation and language skills are a really important part of that.
“We need these languages for Britain’s future. We need these languages so young people can connect and celebrate their heritage.
“So an incoming Labour government will get the qualifications bodies around the table and make sure that we save these subjects for the future.”
