Lib Dems: ‘strongly support’ Turkish

Londra Gazete asked the Liberal Democrat party whether they would join the Conservatives and Labour in guaranteeing the future of Turkish as a GCSE and A level subject.

In a statement a party spokeswoman said: “Liberal Democrats celebrate the diverse range of languages spoken by communities in Britain.  We strongly support languages being available in schools and back the campaign the Turkish community are making to the exam boards.

“In government, we fought to make sure more children had the opportunity to study a language – by putting modern and foreign languages on the National Curriculum from the age of seven.

“Exam boards are independent organisations and make their own decisions based on demand for their courses.  If Liberal Democrats form part of the next government we will meet with the exam boards to indicate that Turkish should continue to be available.”
