LFB takes 350 flood-related 999 calls in London

On Sunday six weeks’ worth of rain is set to pour down in just 12 hours when a so-called “megastorm” hits the UK.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) says its 999 control officers have taken some 350 calls related to flooding across the capital.

Most of its rescue efforts have focused on assisting people from their homes, responding to flooding in underground stations, roads, and properties as well as rescuing people trapped inside cars.

The LFB says its firefighters responded to incidents in Ruislip, Uxbridge, Wimbledon and Carshalton.

In its latest guidance, the fire service warned: “If you’re driving and your car becomes caught in flood waters, ensure you and your passengers unbuckle your seat belts and where possible climb out to safety”.

The floods have also effect train services with no service is currently running between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge on the Metropolitan line, with no Piccadilly line service running between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. There is a good service on the rest of the line however and tickets will be accepted on local buses.

In addition, no service is currently able to run on the District line between Turnham Green and Richmond due to the ongoing floods.

A further two rain warnings, one yellow and one amber, come into effect today. The yellow warning, lasting all day, will stretch to cover areas further east and further north.

Tomorrow night’s football match between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle has been postponed after “extensive” floods, AFC Wimbledon says.

In a statement, the club says they “regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed”.

AFC Wimbledon’s stadium, the club adds, will be closed until further notice.
